Elgin America Compact!

Not in the best condition, but it's a gorgeous compact regardless, and I love the design.

My guess for when this compact is from would be late 1940s or 1950s

I was curious about this brand so with a quick Google search I found this fantastic article http://powderkegcompacts.wordpress.com/2012/01/29/elgin-american/

Do any of you own an Elgin America compact?

  1. Nope, I'd never even heard of it before, but I'm interested to read about it. I really love makeup history. I guess that's why Dior always creates those little flaps in their palettes, covering the product - trying to evoke the feeling of old-school beauty products. What was this product meant to be? A light blush? It seems so pink for a face powder (although I guess the color may have changed after all these years), but I guess it may be, since makeup did tend to be created very pink-toned, as it was sort of the "ideal" complexion back then

    1. A face powder, I agree it's very pink toned though as you mentioned, time & oxidation could have changed it. :)

Oh, also I noticed that, and I love that Dior has the flaps on a lot of their palettes!

    1. Me too! I wish it was in better condition on the front, but the inside is close to perfect. :)

  4. Something to treasure! I've always dreamt of owning makeup compacts from the Art Deco era - I'm a bit of a Great Gatsby fan xo

    1. Definitely! I love this compact. :)

It's worth a try checking eBay if you're really interested, I've seen quite a few similar ones! xo

  5. Heard so much about Elgin Compacts. They are like a piece of history. I love 'old' things :) I own an Estee Lauder compact and it is so cute (it looks like a kitten and the belly has solid perfume!)

That Estee Lauder compact sounds darling, what decade is it from? :)

  6. I have an Elgin American compact I found at an antique shop for $2. The sad thing is that the mirror inside is cracked, but the lid of the compact was so incredible, I couldn't pass it up. It was gold with an engraved appearance, with two jumping gazelle.
